Much of what goes in our bins needn’t be there because it could be recycled, composted or reused. A typical home in the UK puts out 500 kg of rubbish. So for a street of 20 just houses that’s 10 tonnes of landfill costing more than £700 to dispose of. As the community of Presteigne and Norton have shown, its easy to get this down to 200 kg a year with just small changes in our habits, by increasing recycling, composting and reuse.
But some waste just refuses to be recycled, composted or reused – products just haven’t been designed that way! Cwm Harry regularly audit waste to see what is in there. If you’d like to join our team for the day on 8th June 2013 and sort through rubbish and think through what needs to change to get it out of the bin just get in touch. It is fascinating and only occasionally gross.
